影片根据史蒂芬·金的同名短片小说改编，以三幕倒叙的方式，讲述查尔斯·克兰兹的一生，以他39岁因脑瘤去世为开端，以他在闹鬼的房子里度过的童年时光为结尾。。刚刚失去母亲的阿梅（温明娜 饰）参加了一场聚会。聚会上的成员都是母亲在世时的好友及其女儿。阿梅坐在之前母亲的位置陪着阿姨们搓麻将。牌桌上的四人，各色性格，而背后也各有其心酸和奋斗的故事。林多（周采芹 饰）阿姨的精明和强韧让她摆脱童养媳的身份，奋斗到今天 的位置；莺莺（俞飞鸿 饰）阿姨有一段不堪回首的往事，因此希望自己的女儿要勇敢的做自己；安美（卢燕 饰）阿姨受其母亲（邬君梅 饰）的影响，知道要学会在不公平的命运面前发声；而阿梅的母亲（Kieu Chinh 饰）则迫于战乱，和骨肉走失。几位女性均从困苦中走过来，历经人生的磨练，不希望自己的女儿重复自己的悲剧。一出中国女性的故事被娓娓道来。。* Based on the manga by Inoue Noriyoshi, which has also had a SNES game spin-off.
