故事讲述私家侦探哈柏应聘至纽奥尔良一大地主家庭调查一封告密信，由于牵涉入大地主与石油大王之间的斗争中，几乎因而丧命。该片拍来有点造作，但节奏仍算流畅爽朗，其中哈柏与石油大王之妻被关在水室而几乎没顶的高潮戏拍得相当紧凑刺激。。出身贫困的沈相宜凭借努力考上顶尖大学。母亲却将她勤工俭学的钱拿走，贴补弟弟。沈相宜一直受到神秘大叔的资助，她不愿再伸手要钱，与好友去城里打工攒学费。可陆怀川早就派人来接她，而好友竟贪图富贵，冒名顶替。。The woman at the other end of Sam's marriage proposal over the telephone is Diane.
