The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。郭氏平乐正骨已有二百余年行医史，清代时医过慈禧太后，德高医精，闻名遐迩。郭家一直人丁不旺,到第四代传人郭一山,娶了两房夫人都相继去世,只留下一个小女儿。为传宗接代,让郭氏正骨代代相传,郭一山又急急迎娶小他十一岁的山村姑娘云鹤鸣。迎亲路上,新娘坐轿,新郎骑马,乐班子吹吹打打,一路热闹。突然有人抬着担架拦住了迎亲队伍,原来是意大利传教士马利奇大腿受伤,急切赶来,拦路求医。虽然民间讲究迎亲队伍不能中途停止,否则,往后的日子会风波不断,但郭一山还是下马救人。未想到马利奇曾与山中土匪结怨,结婚喜宴上,土匪大闹喜宴,并绑架了郭一山。原来是村中 “永春堂”堂主刘仙堂悄悄向土匪告密，欲置一山于死地。此时除了新娶来的媳妇外，郭家只有病弱的老父、小娘和一个四岁幼女，无人能为之奔走相救。新媳妇还在新房顶着盖头，得知事情原委，毅然决定，女扮男装，与和事佬孙大头一起……。学习成绩优异的水谷雫性格冷淡，不愿与周围的人打交道。这一天，她被老师委派去给一位许久不曾来校的男生送作业。那个男生名叫吉田春，开学第一天就因为打架斗殴而被停课，但是处分解除后也迟迟不见他来学校。见了面才发现，传说中凶神恶煞一般的吉田其实是个十分单纯的大男孩，他会因为别人对他的好而欣喜非常。出于对小雫的信任，吉田终于回到学校。在此期间，夏目朝子、山口贤二等性格各异的青春男女也相继聚到他们身边。男孩女孩的青春注定不留白……。
